OWLAG Alumni celebrate Foundation Day

OWLAG Alumni celebrate Foundation Day

In early 2019, Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation (OWLAF) students based in Gauteng and the Western Cape came together in their respective provinces to celebrate Foundation Day. This program consisted of a session for first-year students on mindsets for success and a session for older students on how to prepare themselves for employment.

In the Western Cape, the girls listened to a talk on the topic of persistence by Dr Boitumelo Theepe, who recently earned her medical degree and is in her first year of internship. Another guest speaker, Mrs Rhoda Chana, addressed the students on employment readiness and in a return appearance Dr Steve spoke to the first-years about how to maintain their health as young adults.

In the Eastern Cape, OWLAG alumnae who have completed their studies and are now working came to speak to their OWLAG sisters at Rhodes about their university experiences and also to share their wisdom on creating a personal brand and developing and maintaining career connections.

Foundation Day is a great way for alumnae to reconnect and share their university experiences, in this instance it has also been a great opportunity for Gugu Ndebele to meet OWLAG graduates.

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation (OWLAF) continues to provide support for the large number of OWLAG graduates who go on to tertiary studies.  As part of the university programme, the students each have a mentor, who meets with them at least once per month and is in touch with them more frequently through phone calls, SMS, and social media.  Twice a year, the mentors and our scholarship administrator, Ms Sue Norval, organize a Foundation Day in each of the three provinces where there is a concentration of OWLAG alumnae who are studying.
