This term the co-curricular sporting programme has moved into full ‘Winter’ mode. Although we carry some of our ‘summer’ codes through the winter terms, Team Games are the main focus of the winter sporting programme.
In grades 8 and 9, participating in a team sport is and Grades 10, 11 and 12 are encouraged to continue to play team sports in order to bring continuity to the senior teams and to pass on their knowledge and skills to the junior teams and beginners.
All the girls have worked hard in pre-season training and this has prepared them for League Matches in the codes of Netball and Hockey. Both of these leagues are well underway.
The Netball girls will be experiencing the professional game in action during the Brutal Fruit Provincial League that is currently touring the country. This gives them the opportunity to see the game played at a very high level and gives them motivation and ideas to bring back to their playing season.
The Hockey District Trials took place in March. The girls found the competition stiff and the Astro-turf unforgiving, however, they gained invaluable experience. Congratulations to Mpho Zwane who successfully made it into the U18 District Squad, as a Goalkeeper. She represented the District in the Gauteng trials at the beginning of May and the results are eagerly awaited.
Nine girls have been entered for the District Touch Rugby Trials in several age groups. Now that the training and hard work have been done, we are hoping that they impress the Selectors as so many of our girls have done in the past.
Planning is well underway for the 3rd leg of the Inter-House competition, the Winter Games Tournament which will be played on the last day of term.
A select group of dedicated girls continue to take part in Karate every Saturday and Sunday and are currently preparing for their next Belt Grading session. The Yoga girls are able to relax and instil a sense of calm during their sessions every Sunday, especially during the upcoming exams. The Soccer girls are excited to start their pre-season training in earnest with their new soccer Coach. The ground work starts now for next term’s League.
