The Parents’ Forum is a group of parents /caregivers of the students from Grades 8 to 12 in that year, elected to represent the girls families. The goals of the Parents’ Forum are to empower families and ensure that they are linked with additional resources within their communities; create strong links between students, parents and the families; ensure effective communication between the families and the Academy and encourage families to be more involved and connected to the life of the Academy.
The committee is composed of the Head of Academy, elected staff members and SRC representatives as well as parent representatives from all 9 Provinces in South Africa. Members of the OWLAG Board participate by invitation.
The programmes and initiatives are informed by the issues that arise from psychosocial assessments, problems raised by students, difficulties identified in the communities that could impact the students’ safety as well as give feedback around issues of concern the feedback from community outreach initiatives.
This year, the focus is on strengthening the relationship and communication between students and their parents/caregivers. The topics that were covered include: parenting skills; improving communication between caregivers and students; increased awareness of substance abuse and available local resources to address these difficulties; raising awareness of various types of child abuse, including human trafficking; and gardening skills to grow food and potentially generate income.
