The Kingsmead College Orchestra and Ensemble Festival for Senior Schools is firmly fixed as one of the musical highlights on schools’ calendars in and around Johannesburg. The aim of the festival is to support young musicians in developing and reinforcing skills such as teamwork, communication, self-discipline, and creativity - qualities that will one day stand them in good stead in the workplace.
According to one of the organisers, OWLAG is one of the schools with the longest history in participating in the festival and this year we were fortunate to be in the company of Trinity house Randpark Ridge, St Alban’s College, SAHETI School, St Peter’s College as well as the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company. The OWLAG Senior String Ensemble opened the programme with a dignified and calming version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. This was followed by the full complement of the OWLAG Orchestra performing a collection of South African Freedom Songs arranged by our very own conductor, Mr Alex Hitzeroth. One of the highlights of the evening was a collaboration between OWLAG and Trinity House Randpark Ridge that comprised a medley of songs by the famous South African singing duo, Mafikizolo. The members of the OWLAG orchestra thoroughly enjoyed some inspiring performances by the other ensembles and left the event energised and satisfied with the effort they put into preparing for the event.
